The importance of managed services and BDR solutions for your customers.

As a strategic business advisor at Collabrance, we always emphasize the importance of having a backup disaster recovery (BDR) plan. It’s not a matter of if, but when you will need it. Our partners like Advanced Office Systems (AOS), work with us at Collabrance to educate the importance of BDR solutions in their technology stacks to their clients, and together we strategize a backup plan that minimizes downtime in the event of a disaster.

The Water Rises: Having a Backup Disaster Recovery Plan

One late night in August, I received a text message from one of our Collabrance partners in Baton Rouge. Fred Self, Senior Technical Consultant at AOS, informed me that his front yard was submerged in water. This was the beginning of the 2016 Louisiana flood where thousands of homes and businesses were affected by rising water over the course of 10 days.

Not only was our partner, AOS, impacted by the heavy rainfall in Louisiana, but one of their client’s offices that we support was two feet under water. The doctor of the local pediatric clinic was diligently working when he noticed he was standing in water. Water began filling the building so quickly that the doctor had to escape out of the 2nd story. The pediatric clinic, which typically sees 100+ patients a day, was completely down. Louisiana was in a state of emergency, and it was time for us at Collabrance and AOS to activate the BDR solution we had in place for the clinic.

Help from Afar: Putting the BDR Solution to Work

Prior to the flooding, AOS had sold the pediatric clinic a technology stack which included a BDR solution with the ability to spin up their servers remotely during an event that their entire facility would be compromised.

During the flood, Collabrance worked with AOS to communicate directly with the clinic. Despite the rising water, AOS was able to retrieve the clinic’s server and Datto which allowed us at Collabrance to remote in and get things working again for the clinic.

While businesses were closing as a result to the flooding, Collabrance worked quickly to confirm the BDR solution successfully performed recent backups and retrieved all of the clinics critical patient data and medical records.

Healing Others: The Impact of a BDR Solution

Just one day after the flooding began, the clinic was able to work from remote office locations with access to their information. In a critical time, having the BDR solution in place allowed the pediatrics clinic to:

  • Continue business as usual being able to open the office immediately the next day
  • Avoid downtime trying to find a way to access critical patient information
  • Serve an influx of patient’s health needs during the flooding by continuing to write prescriptions and access medical records

As my partner’s strategic business advisor for Collabrance, I can’t tell you how gratifying it was to provide AOS and their client a solid backup plan during the traumatic 2016 Louisiana flood. We want to remove the headaches of technology so clients can focus on what they need to, no matter the circumstances.

“One of the things we love about Collabrance is how they handled this situation. They remained calm and helped ensure our end-user’s backup plan was effective. It was so simple,” - Fred Self, Advanced Office Systems.

Moments like these give me the utmost confidence that Collabrance and our partners are truly selling more than just managed services, but peace of mind to each and every one of our customers.
